Is Marriage Religious?

Since I've been in Orange lately, I've been wasting a lot of time arguing with anonymous whoevers on Wikipedia. One such argument has arisen that I'm compelled to share with anyone bored enough to read.

Is marriage religious? I've heard compelling arguments on both sides, but the impression I'm getting is that it may in fact be so. Although in the USA it is considered secular, I am concerned that perhaps marriage laws are like outlawing work on Sunday mornings - although no religion is specified, it is clearly intended to favor the Christian majority.

This is most likely one of those preachy posts I hope will inspire debate, but then remind me of how much no one cares.
